Among the many fascinating things to do in Ouray, Colorado, there is Animas Forks. Originally called Three Forks of the Animas, the first cabins were built there dating back to 1873. The town is located high in the San Juan Mountains.
In 1876 Animas was a mining community. The small community was home to about 450 residents. By 1920 the Animas Forks had become a ghost town.
Located at 11,200 feet getting to Animas Forks is a fascinating adventure. The ghost town is located on the Alpine Loop, a circular route that connects Silverton and Ouray with Lake City.
The scenic route has over 100,000 visitors each! The route has also become a popular spot for hiking, fishing, and horseback riding during the summertime. High clearance routes are recommended while visiting the four-wheel terrain. Alpine Loop covers 65 miles with some of Colorado’s most intriguing sights!
