Formed partially by the Uncompahgre River, Uncompahgre Gorge is a deep canyon that’s also formed by Red Mountain Creek and it is located just south of Ouray. On its northern end, the gorge flows into a box canyon which also serves as the home of the popular Ouray Ice Park.
To get to Uncompahgre Gorge, you’ll need to drive along U.S. Highway 550. The drive is truly spectacular as it cuts through steep cliffs that rise hundreds of thousands of feet above the river, creating a scenic backdrop virtually every step of the way. Speaking of scenery, a number of waterfalls flow into Uncompahgre Gorge, Bear Creek Falls being one example. For those of you that dabble in photography, Uncompahgre Gorge is a picture taking paradise.
