Making predictions about the weather is one of the numerous highlights of living in Colorado. When will the snow begin to fall? When will the melting of the ice occur? When are the colors of the leaves going to change? It is this annual changing of the colors of leaves which, among plenty of other reasons, make the fall season in Ouray and beyond one to truly admire.
To get a better idea of the process behind the fall colors and how they change, let’s take a brief look into what’s going on beyond what the naked eye can see. The colors of the leaves change due to a mixture of chlorophyll and sugars, the former is a pigment which gives the leaves their customary green color. When the temperatures drop, the trees receive a sort of signal which “tells” the trees winter has arrived. When this occurs, the leaves of the tree will create a cell layer preventing chlorophyll from giving the leaves their distinct pigment. Since rejuvenation isn’t taking place, whatever pigment remains—the beautiful yellows and oranges—can be seen.
A great to seen and snap the fall colors while you’re in Ouray is by driving on the San Juan Skyway. Depending on how much time you have and what you intend to in Ouray, the six-hour drive is one that’s highly recommended.
