Have you visited Mesa Verde National Park in Montezuma County yet? If not, you should definitely add it to your itinerary when you stay at one of the Alpenglow Vacation Rentals. This massive park was created by President Theodore Roosevelt way back in the early 1900s and today, it is a World Heritage Site with numerous sights to explore.
Mesa Verde is the largest archaeological preserve in the country, boasting over 4,000 sites and more than 500 cliff dwellings among its 51,000+ acres. Speaking of cliff dwellings, the park is home to Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in the entire continent of North America.
Before it became the sprawling national park we know today, Mesa Verde served as the seasonal home of the Foothills Mountain Complex, a group of nomadic Paleo-Indians, beginning somewhere around 7500 BCE. As new groups moved to the area, the people survived by using their hunting, gathering, and farming skills. It wasn’t until the end of the 12th century that the cliff dwellings began to emerge, but by the late 1200s severe droughts forced the people to move elsewhere.
